In 1968 Silverman began collaborating with playwright/director Richard Foreman resulting in several works of music-theatre.

Their first work, ELEPHANT STEPS was produced at Tanglewood. In 1970 they found a home at Lyn Austin's Lenox Arts Center/Music Theatre Group. Most of their works were premiered there. DOCTOR SELAVY'S MAGIC THEATRE enjoyed a long run Off Broadway. Their works have been performed internationally.

In 1976 Foreman and Silverman were chosen to direct and conduct a 50th anniversary production of THREE PENNY OPERA produced by Joe Papp at Lincoln Center which was nominated for both TONY and GRAMMY awards.
